Morrisons leads the way with innovative toilet policy across UK stores
The supermarket proudly announces it is the first to adhere to "The Bog Standard" guidelines, enhancing support for men experiencing incontinence following prostate cancer treatment

Morrisons has taken a pioneering step in the retail sector by becoming the first supermarket chain in the UK to implement a comprehensive toilet policy across its extensive network of nearly 500 stores. This initiative includes the installation of male sanitary bins in customer toilets, marking a significant advancement in the support provided to men who experience incontinence, particularly those who have undergone life-saving treatment for prostate cancer.

The introduction of this policy aligns with "The Bog Standard" guidelines, a set of recommendations developed by phs Group and Prostate Cancer UK. These guidelines aim to educate organisations on the importance of providing essential facilities for men dealing with incontinence, a condition that affects many, especially post-prostate cancer treatment. Morrisons’ decision to roll out this initiative was largely influenced by customer feedback, reflecting the retailer's ongoing commitment to enhancing accessibility and inclusivity for all shoppers.

Earlier this year, Morrisons also made headlines by introducing stoma-friendly toilets in all its supermarkets, further solidifying its position as a leader in providing inclusive facilities. Additionally, the retailer has taken proactive steps to raise awareness about cancer symptoms by incorporating new NHS messaging on its own-brand bath and shower products. Both of these initiatives were notable firsts for supermarkets in the UK.

In a further effort to create a more accommodating shopping environment, Morrisons has launched Sensory Support Boxes in collaboration with the National Autistic Society. These boxes are designed to enhance the shopping experience for individuals on the autism spectrum, showcasing the supermarket’s commitment to catering to diverse needs.

Statistics reveal that one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, with the risk increasing to one in four for Black men. Early detection is vital, as many cases are treatable. However, it is estimated that up to 60% of men who undergo a radical prostatectomy—surgical removal of the prostate—may experience urinary incontinence. Despite these significant figures, suitable disposal facilities in public male toilets remain alarmingly scarce, often deterring men from engaging in everyday activities.

It is important to note that while this initiative enhances facilities in Morrisons supermarkets, it does not extend to the convenience stores, as not all Morrisons Dailys are equipped with toilets.

David Scott, Corporate Affairs Director at Morrisons, expressed pride in the supermarket’s groundbreaking achievement: "We are proud to be the first supermarket to meet The Bog Standard guidelines in every one of our stores. By listening to our customers and collaborating closely with both organisations, we recognise the challenges many men face when living with incontinence. Providing appropriate facilities across all Morrisons stores is a crucial step in helping customers feel more confident and supported while out and about, while also improving access to suitable facilities nationwide."

Nick Ridgman, Head of Support Services at Prostate Cancer UK, further emphasised the importance of this initiative: "Many men need sanitary bins to dispose of their used pads discreetly and hygienically, yet these bins are often absent from men's toilets. This absence causes stress and shame, preventing men from going out, attending work, or engaging in activities they enjoy. Morrisons is making its stores more welcoming and accessible for every employee and customer, and we hope other companies will follow suit. We wholeheartedly support the Dispose with Dignity initiative and urge the UK Government to back our call for a change in HSE guidance. This is the only way to ensure men have access to male sanitary bins in public restrooms."

Morrisons’ commitment to inclusivity and customer care sets a new standard in the retail industry, paving the way for other organisations to follow. By addressing the often-overlooked needs of men experiencing incontinence, the supermarket is fostering a more supportive environment that encourages dignity and confidence in all customers. As this initiative unfolds, it is hoped that it will inspire a wider movement towards improved facilities in public spaces, ensuring that everyone can participate fully in society without fear or embarrassment.
