Josh Kerr shatters one-mile world record with historic run in London
The British star produced a stunning performance at the London Diamond League to break a 27-year-old world record.

Josh Kerr has etched his name into athletics history after breaking the men's one-mile world record at the London Diamond League, becoming the first athlete in 27 years to claim the prestigious mark.

The 28-year-old clocked an extraordinary time of 3min 42.66sec, eclipsing Hicham El Guerrouj's long-standing record of 3:43.13, which had stood since 1999. In doing so, Kerr became the seventh British man to hold the one-mile world record, joining legendary names such as Roger Bannister, Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett.

Kerr's achievement was the culmination of months of meticulous planning. Back in March, he boldly announced his intention to break the world record in London and built his entire outdoor season around the attempt.

His preparation reflected that single-minded focus. Kerr revealed that he wrote the words "I ran 3.42 at the London Diamond League. July 18th, 2026," in his notebook every day. Even his recovery sessions were tailored to the target, with his ice baths lasting precisely three minutes and 42 seconds.

The race unfolded almost exactly as planned. Supported by two pacemakers, including his training partner Brannon Kidder, Kerr maintained the required pace before unleashing a devastating finish over the final stages of the race.

American runner Yared Nuguse attempted to stay with him but ultimately finished more than three seconds behind as Kerr powered down the home straight to the delight of the packed London Stadium crowd. His 1500m split of 3:27.62 also improved his own British record for the distance.

"It's silly to call it that early because there's a lot of things which can go wrong," Kerr said after the race. "But I am surrounded by amazing people and was just able to stay consistent, put the work in, and I knew I had 3:42 in me."

"If I'm to leave my mark on this sport as a British legend, with the legends behind me and following in their footsteps, I have to put in those performances."

Kerr also praised his support team, including his sponsor Brooks, which designed custom spikes and an aerodynamic race kit specifically for the world record attempt.

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe hailed the performance as one of the finest mile races ever produced.

"Absolutely incredible," Coe said. "Foot perfect. To go into there with that kind of mental resilience, not off that many races this year. He executed it brilliantly."

Kerr has never been one to chase appearances or commercial opportunities, instead preferring to focus on achieving major milestones. His gamble to centre an entire season around one race has paid off in spectacular fashion, securing his place among Britain's greatest middle-distance runners.
