Koeman steps down as Netherlands boss after World Cup exit amid racist abuse of players
Ronald Koeman has resigned as Netherlands manager following the team's World Cup elimination, while the Dutch FA condemned racist abuse directed at players after the penalty shootout defeat to Morocco.

Ronald Koeman has resigned as Netherlands manager following the country's World Cup exit, ending his second spell in charge of the national team.

The announcement came shortly after the Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco in the Round of 32, losing on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Monterrey.

Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville all missed penalties in the shootout and were later subjected to racist, discriminatory and hateful abuse on social media.

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) strongly condemned the abuse and said it would pursue legal action where possible.

"We find this appalling," the KNVB said in a statement.

The governing body added that reports would be assessed by legal experts to determine whether criminal offences had been committed before being referred to prosecutors for possible investigation.

"Football brings together millions of different people, whereas discrimination does the exact opposite. It therefore runs counter to everything football stands for," the statement added.

Koeman, 63, confirmed his departure in a message posted on Instagram, reflecting on his managerial career and explaining that family had become his priority.

"Looking back on my career, I feel especially proud. I have worked with clubs and people that shaped me and gave me memories that I will cherish for a lifetime," he wrote.

"We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would write history. That didn't work out. No-one is more disappointed about that than me."

Koeman also revealed that recent personal circumstances had changed his outlook on life.

"The past years have made me realise again that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes."

His wife, Bartina Koeman, is currently undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Koeman's contract had been due to expire following the World Cup, but his resignation brings an immediate end to his tenure.

The former Barcelona manager first took charge of the Netherlands in 2018, guiding the team to impressive performances in the UEFA Nations League before leaving to manage Barcelona. He returned for a second spell but struggled to replicate those earlier successes.

His final match saw the Netherlands adopt a more defensive approach against Morocco, but they were unable to progress after the penalty shootout defeat.

The racist abuse directed at Dutch players echoes similar incidents following major international tournaments in recent years, including the online abuse suffered by England players Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho after the Euro 2020 final.

The KNVB said it remains committed to tackling discrimination and ensuring those responsible are held accountable as the Netherlands begin the search for a new manager.
